Anshun University is located in Anshun City, Guizhou Province. Anshun City is situated in the central and western part of Guizhou Province and is known as the belly of Guizhou and the throat of Yunnan. The total area of the whole city is 9,228 square kilometers, and the total population is 3.0537 million. Among them, the population of ethnic minorities accounts for 41.9% of the total population. Anshun has a long history and profound cultural heritage and is a famous historical and cultural city in Guizhou Province. It boasts numerous cultural treasures, including the Puding Chuandong Paleolithic site, known as the Lamp of Asian Civilization; the mysterious Guangling Red Cliff Inscriptions; the world’s only well-preserved Ming Dynasty Tunpu Villages (garrison settlements); Anshun Dixi Opera recognized as the living fossil of Chinese drama and Anshun Batik which is honored as the First Dye of the East. The city holds prestigious titles such as Home of Tunpu Culture and Hometown of Batik. It is also among China’s earliest designated Class-A Tourist Open Cities, a National Outstanding Tourism City, one of China’s Most Beautiful Cities, a Top Ten Charming Leisure City, and a Top Ten Picturesque City. Notably, it is home to the world-famous Huangguoshu Waterfall. Furthermore, Anshun is the birthplace of Wang Ruofei, one of the senior proletarian revolutionaries of the Communist Party of China and one of the 100 Outstanding Heroes and Models Who Made Significant Contributions to the Founding of New China.

Established in 2006 through upgrading its predecessor institution, Anshun University is a full-time undergraduate university. Its educational roots trace back to the founding of Qianjiang Normal School in 1938. Over its 80-year history, the institution evolved through multiple phases, including National Qianjiang Middle School, Provincial Anshun Normal School, and Anshun Teachers College. The university has nurtured nearly 80,000 qualified professionals across various fields. Most graduates serve on the frontline of basic education, grassroots governments, enterprises, and public institutions, significantly contributing to educational advancement and socio-economic development in Southwest China. In 2016, the university passed the Ministry of Education’s evaluation for undergraduate teaching quality. A year later, it was designated as a Guizhou Provincial Master’s Degree Program Development Unit, marking a milestone in its academic progression.

Anshun University occupies a campus area of 750,000 square meters, with a floor space of 342,500 square meters. Its library houses over 980,000 print books and provides access to 17 Chinese and foreign academic databases, including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Master’s and Doctoral Thesis Database, VIP Database (CQVIP) Renmin University Copying Press Newspaper & Journal Database and Special Topics Foreign Language Database (Highway Intercom). These resources form a comprehensive literature system that supports the university’s academic programs and research needs. The university employs 787 full-time faculty and staff members, including 300 senior professionals (associate professors or above), 598 faculty members with master’s or doctoral degrees, two experts receiving provincial government allowances, one provincial outstanding young scientific talent, seven provincial-level distinguished teaching professors, two academic leaders in philosophy and social sciences (recognized by Guizhou’s higher education institutions), 11 municipal-level experts (designated by Anshun City) and 17 provincial Thousand-Level Talent Program awardees. The university prioritizes undergraduate education, offering 51 undergraduate programs across 10 disciplines—Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Management, and Arts—and currently enrolls over 11,000 full-time students.

The university currently comprises 16 secondary colleges, three teaching and research departments, eight teaching and research support institutions, as well as one provincial-level academician workstation, two provincial 2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers, two provincial humanities and social science research bases, two provincial academic societies, two provincial social science research institutions, two provincial traditional sports training bases for ethnic minorities, two provincial national vocational skills appraisal centers, two provincial special education teacher training centers, and two provincial education department engineering centers. Additionally, it has four provincial education department innovation teams. The university has one first-class construction and cultivation discipline in Guizhou Province, one characteristic key discipline in Guizhou Province, two key disciplines in Guizhou Province, and five key supported disciplines in Guizhou Province. It also has nine first-class provincial-level majors. In the past three years, a total of 83 provincial-level golden courses (first-class courses) have been developed, and teachers have guided students to win 684 provincial-level and above awards. The university also has one provincial experimental teaching demonstration center and two provincial teaching teams.

Over the past five years, the university has been approved for 650 research projects at various levels, including 14 national-level projects, 36 provincial-level projects, and 159 local-level projects, with a total research funding of 44 million yuan. University faculty members have published 1,293 academic papers, of which 590 are high-level academic papers, and have authored 104 books. They have also received 89 research awards at or above the municipal level, including 12 awards at or above the provincial level. The university actively serves the economic and social development of Guizhou Province, focusing on cultivating characteristic and advantageous disciplines that are adapted to regional development. It fully leverages its talent and research strengths, as well as the platform advantage of the Guizhou Provincial Higher Education Research Center for Rural Revitalization, which is a key research base for humanities and social sciences in Guizhou universities. The university actively supports Guizhou’s main strategy of focusing on the “Four New Missions” and tackling the “Four Modernizations.” The university’s disciplines and majors, such as Special Education, Tourism Management, and Aeronautical Engineering, have developed distinct educational characteristics that serve regional strategic development.

The university adheres to the principle of open education and has established long-term cooperative relations with provincial and national universities and research institutions such as Guizhou University, Guangzhou University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, North University of China, Qingdao University, and Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It has signed cooperation agreements with more than 20 universities in countries like South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as regions such as Macao, China, and Taiwan, China. Excellent students are selected and sent to partner universities for study.
